Bowie Baseball Athletic Code of Conduct

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide education, evaluation, development, competition, and exposure to our young athletes under the supervision, experiences, knowledge and direction of our outstanding staff utilizing the finest fields in the county.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

At Bowie Baseball, we believe that participation in our programs can provide players the opportunity to improve both mentally and physically.  We pride ourselves in teaching the proper way to play and practice, as well as strive to get the most out of our players with the intention of them moving on to play at a higher level.  Important life lessons will also be taught through the mental and physical challenges of training and competition and through the experiences of winning and losing graciously and respectfully.

PROGRAM GOALS

Bowie Baseball is aware that players participate in baseball for the following reasons:

·      Enjoyment of the Game

·      Well maintained facilities

·      Self-Improvement

·      Personal and Team Competition

·      Like minded, goal-oriented friends 

·   Exposure

Therefore, Bowie Baseball Program commits to the following:

·      Offer players an enjoyable experience

·      Offer suitable playing fields.

·      Promote personal improvement in skills, physical condition and knowledge of the sport

·      Provide the greatest possible opportunity for athletes to participate in both competitive practices and games

·      Promote programs of excellence that accomplish the above and lead to success on and off the field; and

·      Provide maximum exposure in order to further their athletic career

In order to achieve these goals, we hold the following positive expectations for the primary stakeholders in Bowie Baseball.

COACH’S CODE

The Program Director and Coaches are leaders, dedicated to more than the basics of competition.  As professional educators, leaders, and role models for players, Bowie Baseball coaches and Program Directors will:

·      Exemplify the highest character as a role model for young people.

·      Be a coach of the team, not just a coach of your son/daughter.

·      Recognize the individual worth and reinforce the self-image of each team member.

·      Establish a realistic team goal or vision for each season and communicate that to the athletes and parents.

·      Encourage and assist players to set personal goals.

·      Create a set of training rules for athletes that reflect the positive values of abstaining from the use of alcohol and other drugs.

·      Strive to develop the qualities of competence, character, civility and citizenship in each player.

·      Proved a safe, challenging and encouraging environment for practice and competition.

·      Gain an awareness of the importance of prevention, care, and treatment of athletic injuries.

·      Teach and abide by the rules of the game.

·      Build and maintain ethical relationships with coaches and administrators.

·      Strive for excellence in coaching skills and techniques through professional improvement.

·      Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.

PARENT’S CODE

Parents play a vital role in the development of their sons or daughters and the success of Bowie Baseball’s programs.  Therefore, we expect parents to do the following:

·      Be a positive role model through their own actions to make sure their child has the best experience possible.

·      Be a fan of the team, not just a fan of your son/daughter.

·      Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, and spectators.

·      Be respectful of all officials’ decisions.

·      Do not instruct their children before or after a game, because it may conflict with the coach’s plans and strategies.

·      Praise their son or daughter in their attempt to try to improve themselves.

·      Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of the contest.

·      Help their child learn that success is experienced in the development of their skills and that they can feel good about themselves, win or lose.

·      Address problems or concerns with coaches and commissioner in an appropriate manner, including proper time and place.  Be sure to follow the chain of command (Coach, Baseball Commissioner, Athletic Director, Bowie Boys and Girls Club Executive Board).

·      Do not engage in any behavior which would endanger the health, safety or well-being of any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee.

·      Encourage your child to treat any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee with respect regardless of race, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or ability.

·      Do not encourage your child, or any other person, to initiate a fight or scuffle with any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee.

·      Reinforce our alcohol and other drug-free policies by refraining from the use of any such substances before and during events.

·      Respect the rules of the facility.

·      Respect the coaches and program directors decisions.  Bowie Baseball is always looking out for the best interest of the player.

SUPPORTER’S CODE (other adult fan)

·      We expect these program supporters to do the following:

·      Be a positive role model through their behavior at Bowie Baseball.

·      Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators, and support groups.

·      Be respectful of all officials’ decisions.

·      Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team.

·      Praise athletes in their attempt to improve themselves.

·      Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of the sport.

·      Reinforce our alcohol and other drug-free policies by refraining from the use of any such substances before and during athletic contests.

ATHLETE’S CODE

Given our belief that baseball provides a unique opportunity for the development of the physical conditioning, athletic skill, and character traits, we expect every Bowie Baseball athlete to strive for the following:

Competence

·      To develop the skills necessary to participate competently in the game.

·      To demonstrate knowledge of the rules and conventions of the game.

·      To demonstrate knowledge of the strategies of the game.

·      To abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Character

·      To be dependable in fulfilling obligations and commitments.

·      To accept responsibility for consequences of actions, to not make excuses or blame others.

·      To strive to excel.

·      To be committed.

·      To persevere, give 100% effort and not give up in the face of setbacks.

·      To demonstrate truthfulness.

·      To play by the rules of the game.

·      To refrain from engaging in any behavior which would endanger the health, safety or well being of any coach, player, parent, participant, official, or any other attendee.

·      To control anger and frustration and refrain from displays of temper and bad language.

·      To accept losing and winning graciously; by congratulating opponents and by not sulking or displaying other negative behaviors.

Civility

·      To refrain from “trash talk” and other put-downs of opponents and teammates.

·      To treat any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee with respect regardless of race, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or ability.

·      To refrain from a fight or scuffle with a coach, player, parent, official, or any other attendee.

·      To be fair and treat others as one wishes to be treated.

·      To understand that the coach’s decision is in the best interest for myself.

·      To listen to and try to understand others.

·      To be compassionate and sensitive to others.

·      To actively support teammates and others.

Citizenship

·      To be faithful to the ideals of the game, including sportsmanship.

·      To keep commitments to the team.

·      To show team spirit, encourage others and contribute to good morale.

·      To put the good of the team ahead of personal goals.

·      To set a good example for teammates, younger athletes, and fans.

FAILURE TO ABIDE TO THE CODE

Failure to abide to the code while attending, coaching, officiating or participating at Bowie Baseball sporting events will be subject to disciplinary action, including but not limited to the following in any order or combination:

·      Verbal warning issued by a Bowie Baseball representative.

·      Immediate ejection from that event followed by a written warning issued by the Bowie Baseball commissioner or Bowie Boys and Girls Club representative.

·      A termed suspension from Bowie Baseball events and/or facilities issued by the Bowie Boys and Girls Club Baseball Commissioner or Executive Board.
